What is figured bass ?
Figured bass is a method to mark inversion of a chord in baroque period.
Commonly called "Basso Continuo".
The harpsichord player plays the chord that is applied below the part of bass or cello.
Common symbols:

means root position

means 3rd inversion.
the symbols is based on the interval.
the harpsichord player can improvise the accompaniment part. the cello plays the bass note.
